Hard-up households can save an energy-efficient fortune

Families struggling to cope with the rising cost of living could "save a fortune" by using simple energy-saving tips, it has been reported.
Record numbers of UK households are being forced to tighten their belts as energy prices rise and mortgage payments go up, according to the Sun.
The publication offered a number of tips for those that can not afford "home improvements needed to decrease their fuel bills".
Among the money-saving hints was the use of energy-efficient light bulbs that use up to four-fifths (80 per cent) less electricity than standard ones offering a saving of "around £600 over the life of the bulbs".
"Turning the thermostat down by one degree can cut ten per cent off the typical energy bill, saving £105 a year," the article added.
Meanwhile, a commentator wrote in the Independent last month that the cost of living had "shot up".
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown added that families were suffering the effects of the Northern Rock crisis, having their homes repossessed and losing jobs.
