£2.6 billion: cost of DIY accidents

Britons caused £2.6 billion worth of damage to their properties through DIY accidents last year, according to research.
Research from
Churchill Insurance found that a fifth of householders have caused damage to their home or to its contents in the last year while making home improvements.
Average claims cost £540, meaning that those homeowners without adequate policies may be required to spend a substantial amount in repair costs.
Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, commented: "Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home."
Examples of typical accidents suffered include breaking furniture by falling off a ladder and spilling paint on carpet.
Homeowners concerned about the impact of DIY accidents on their finances may wish to seek
debt help.
